James Joseph Osteen

RESEARCHER: Information and DESCENDANTS provided to T.Mason 13Apr2002 and more available from Bryan Glenn <pgandbg@bellsouth.net>. Quoting Debbie Lundsford Yates, 11/2001: Believed to be brother of Hardy. Joseph married in Lauderdale County, where his first wife died. I believe he remarried in DeSoto County.

James Joseph was in Lauderdale County by 1840, and as early as 1827 as indicated in his obituary. I suppose he could have moved to Tennessee earlier, with the remainder of his family following at a later date. Numerous land transactions exist in Lauderdale County for James J. Osteen and Hardy R. Osteen, jointly, indicating a close relationship.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE: February 17, 1899 - Morrisville - Mr. Joe Osteen, one of Lauderdale County's oldest and most substantial citizens died last Friday night at age 82. He was buried at Mt. Pleasant Saturday evening; was a member of Liberty Church.
LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE: February 17, 1889 - Lightfoot - Mr. Joseph Osteen, one of the earliest settlers of the county, died in our community on the 10th. He came to Lauderdale in 1827 while still a boy with his widowed mother whom he supported by day labor until her death. The he began rafting and dealing in stock. He later purchased a farm and has steadily increased in wealth.

Joseph Lafater Osteen

RESEARCHER: Information and DESCENDANTS provided to T.Mason 13Apr2002 and more available from Bryan Glenn <pgandbg@bellsouth.net>.

Debbie Lunsford Yates <Deb@lunsford.zzn.com>, wrote Bryan Glenn on 12/2001:
Something that may be of interest. I've looked at the handwritten census of 1880 Tate County, Mississippi. The Safater Osteen appears to be Lafater Osteen. If you look on the preceding page, 217B, a J. S. Linly is listed. The "L" appears to be an "S" same as on the following page for the Osteen family. On the page following the Osteen family, page 218B, a Henry Lewis is listed. The "L" in the name Lewis also appears to be an "S", thus the name Sewis. Joseph L. Osteen must have been Joseph Lafater Osteen.

Census: 1880, DeSoto County, MS

Amanda A. Lunsford

RESEARCHER: Information and DESCENDANTS provided to T.Mason 13Apr2002 and more available from Bryan Glenn <pgandbg@bellsouth.net>.

A marriage record located in Lauderdale County, Tennessee.
J. L. Osteen married Amanda (F. A. or A. F.) Lunsford 26-Jul-1855. The absolute identity of these two individuals has not been proven, other than through the granddaughter of William Lunsford. Sophronia Osteen was raised by William Lunsford and Mariah Norris Lunsford. She is listed as living in their household on the 1860 and 1870 census of Lauderdale County. The Book "Keltner Family" by Clarice Haynes Hellums shows that the father of Sophronia Osteen Keltner was Joseph Osteen. The 1860 census shows her as age 4, the 1870 census shows her age as 14, which would place her date of birth as 1856. Her tombstone reads 1854.
