1: Taken from the book "A Carpenter Family of Lancaster" by A. Y. Casanova, Philipsburg, Pa., reprinted from "The Pennsylvania-German", 1910.
Samuel: was commissioned a Justice of the Peace of Fairfield County, Ohio January 9, 1800. Named Bern twp after the Canton of Bern, in Switzerland. He and Emanuel were the first judicial officers in the county.
In the fall of 1800, he went back to Lancaster County, PA. to talk his father, John into moving to Ohio. He finally prevailed and the whole family including David started moving to Ohio on the 15th of May, 1802.
He became the Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for Fairfield County, Ohio after his uncle Emanuel retired. Held the office until his death.2: Federal Population Schedule, Fairfield County, Berne Twp, Page 081, 1820 Federal Census Index.

Berne: This township was christened Berne by Samuel Carpenter, one of its earliest settlers, in honor of the Canton of Berne, Switzerland, the home of his ancestry....The Carpenters are credited with being the earliest settlers in the township.... It was in 1798 that William, David, Samuel and John Carpenter, with their father, emigrated from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and settled in Sections 7 and 8, in the Hocking valley, just below Lancaster. Below them were the Shellenberger boys, Samuel and Henry...4: Lancaster Eagle Gazette (Lancaster, Ohio), March, 24, 1973 "In 1805, Emanuel and Samuel Carpenter received the land patent for Seciton 10 of Madison Township. A year later (1806) Emanuel Carpenter Sr, received the land patent for Section 5, and in 1812 for section 9. Section 5 he disposed of to DavidCarpenter (son of John Carpenter) and Isaac Koontz. Both were son-in-laws of Emanuel Carpenter Sr."
