Clarence Bryan (Slim) Foster

SOURCE: (1) Death certificate - states he died from acute rheumatic fever, embolism, multiple rheumatic heart disease, infarction, multiple - contributory causes were pyelitis, aneurysim left popleteal artery (idiopathic). Autopsy performed to confirm diagnosis. Osric H. Armstrong, M.D.
(2) Marriage license and certificate. Copies on file.
(3) Sallie Land Leggett. Called "Slim," he was very out-going and made many friends. When he and Sallie Land first married he operated the "Two Mile Inn," a service station and sandwich shop. Their first child was born there. He was operating the Magnolia Service Station in Tallulah at the time of his death. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Sallie says he sang bass in the school quartet, was on track team, pole vaulter and cheer-leader. He was a humorist and told "tall tales." During the depression people would come by the gas station he ran begging for food. Slim would give them a job to do for food. Personal characteristics - he was 6'5" tall, very thin narrow shoulders. He had light brown unruly hair. Photographs show him wearing horn rimmed glasses.

Sallie Land

(4) 1920 U.S. census, Richland Parish, LA. Listed with mother and siblings.
(5) "Oral interview with Sallie Land Leggett," Summer 1989, by Sally Jo F. Gibson. Sallie L. Leggett was living in San Bruno, CA at the time. She attended Cypress Bayou elementary school in Richland Parish, LA. She gave the valadictory address of the 1920-21 session. She graduated from Delhi (LA) High school, attended Lousiana Tech, Ruston, LA for two years and graduated from Tyler Commercial College, Tyler, TX.
She joined the Midway Methodist Church, Mitchener, Richland Parish, LA when she was 11 years old, in 1912 and was christened in 1918. She taught elementary school in Madison Parish at a salary of $85.00 a month. She then worked at Tallulah Bakery, owned by John Post, for two years, leaving that job for her education at Tyler Commercial College. When she came home she worked at Morgan & Lindsay, Tallulah, LA, for approximately one and a half years, which earned her $9.00 a week. She then worked at Tallulah Ice Plant as book-keeper (about $80.00 a month salary), at Chicago Mill as a stenographer (salary $65.00 plus commission - a little over $100.00 commission per month), Franklin Furniture Store owned by Gene and Inez Blanchard Wallace, USDA Entomology Laboratory as secretary (salary $225.00 per month). She was working at the "Lab" at the time of her marriage to Tilford Watts.
She told Sally Jo F. Gibson that the train which came through Tallulah, LA was the Illinois Central Gulf, commonly called the "IC" ran East to West through Tallulah.
She moved to San Bruno, CA in 1971 when she married Erasmus Mervin "Raz" Leggett. She joined Vacaville Chapter, Eastern Star, September 1972. Raz owned a small ranch at Vacaville, CA and they spent quite a bit of their time there. She joined the United Methodist church of San Bruno, CA in June, 1972.
She is noted for her craft skills as is evident by the numerous and beautiful Christmas ornaments displayed by her children and grand-children during the holiday season each year.
She was a member of Harrison Colony Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).


Clarence Bryan Foster Jr

SOURCE: (1) Sallie Land Leggett. C.B. Foster, Jr. lived only two days after his premature birth. He is buried in Silver Cross Cemetery, Tallulah, LA next to his father and his paternal grandparents. His grave in about 50 yards north of the east gate entrance.
