WOMAN IS STRUCK DOWN BY VEHICLE
Mrs. L. L. Catterson struck on North Main by Unknown Driver
Mrs. Louisa L Catterson was struck by a hit-and-run driver shortly before 7 o'clock last night as she was crossing North Main street a short distance north of the Fifth street intersection.
The 93-year old woman suffered a broken right arm and a deep gash in her forehead and back injuries.
Her body was discovered by Millard Cook and William Wilson, employees of the maintenance division of the highway department.
About that time two young men in a V-Ford drove up from the south and volunteered to take the woman to the hospital. They then came to town to report the accident to Night-watchman Charles Rose and Officer William Auffert, who in turn notified Sheriff Delma Carmichael.
The officers made an investigation, learning that Mrs. Catterson, who resides in the corner house at the intersection, 604 North Main St. was crossing the street to go to the home of Mrs. Mary Yehle, who lives just east across the pavement.
About that time Mrs. Catterson's son, Hal Catterson, who lives at the north edge of Maryville on No 71 arrived for a visit with his mother and leaned that she was in the hospital.
The officers found shattered glass from the headlight of the car which evidently struck Mrs. Catterson, her broken spectacles and her hat. Her hat had been tossed up on the curbing by one of the spectators who had gathered at the scene.
Officers believe that the vehicle which struck Mrs. Catterson was going north due to the position of the body when found on the pavement and the fact that her right arm was broken.
A small amount of blood was found on the pavement where Mrs. Catterson had lain before she was picked up. Broken glass was found on the pavement for a distance of ten feet north.
Highway Patrolman David Harrison also was notified of the accident and efforts are being made to locate a motor vehicle with a broken headlight.
Officers today placed the time of the accident at 6:30 o'clock bast night. Apparently there were no witnesses to the accident. It is the opinion of the officers that the car which struck Mrs. Catterson was a 1935 or 1936 Ford and they said that any person noticing a car which might have been involved to report to Sheriff Delma Carmichael.
