James Jameson

1Ephraim Orcutt Jameson 1832-1902, Jamesons in America, The 1647-1900 (The Rumford Press, Concord, N.H. Published in Boston, Mass. 1901), p 131, FHL film 1036257 Item 2. "Mr. Jameson and wife Margaret, according to record, resided in the Parish of St. Anne, which was established in 1692, County of Essex, Colony of Virginia. They gave a deed conveying fifty acres of land to Thomas Short, which was admitted to record May 17, 1720. Margaret Jameson freely relinquishing her right of dower in said land the same day.

Mrs. Jameson probably died before her husband, as no mention is made of her in his will, which was dated April 19, 1736, proved Nov. 17, 1736 and reads as follows:

" IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. I. James Jameson, being sick and weak. but of sound and perfect memory, do make, constitute and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner following:
Item.  I give and bequeath to my son James the land I bought of Richard Coleman, lying in King & Queen County:
Item.. I leave ten pounds current money to my son David and one Gold ring with a stone to Mrs. Eleanor Roy: and will that all the remainder of my Estate of what kind soever be Equally divided amongst my beloved sons. Thomas, James and David. Appointing the Rev Robert Rose, Mr. Dan Gaines, Mungo Roy & my said son James, Exr. of this my last Will and Testament.James Jameson [Seal]"
The inventory and appraisemeot of his estate were made Nov. 17, 1736, by com­missioners appointed. Daniel Gaines. Thomas Short. and Charles Sharp, and admit­ted to record May 17, 1737.  James Jameson, the son named as one of the execu­tors, being a minor, John Vawter was appointed in his place until he should become of age. Rev. Robert Rose became the guardian of James Jameson and Thomas Jameson the guardian of David Jameson, during their minority, and filed their bonds of £1,000 each. Dec. 18, 1737."

"     Mr. Jameson is mentioned in Thomas Walker's journal of 1750 as "Capt  Jemy­son near Panther Gap." This place is in Rockbridge Co., Va.
    Mr. Jameson, in 1737, gave bonds as guardian of his youngest brother, David Jameson.  Capt. Jameson must have died between Thursday. Nov. 26. 1767, on which day he witnessed some transaction on record, and the following July 28, 1768. when his son Thomas Jameson was granted letters of administration on his father's estate. The estate was appraised Sept. 24, 1772 by William Pannell, Wm. Bronaugh, and Uriel Mallory.
    Capt. Jameson, it appears, must have been a resident, for a time, of Orange Co.. Va. Little is known of him beyond his military standing as a captain, socially is styled "gentleman," and held the office of a justice of the peace. May 26, 1757, the commissioners who appraised the estate of Jeremiah Morton were sworn by Capt. Jameson, gentleman."

She was born, 1722, in Essex C., Va. They resided in Liberty Hall, Essex Co., Va. Mr Jameson died Dec. 6, 1766. Mrs. Jameson died July 18, 1806.

Lieut. Gov. David Jameson

1William and Mary College quarterly historical magazine, FHL US/CAN Film 1255 pg 93. "Edmund Smith, father of Mildred Jameson, was descended from the Martians and Reades
of Yorktown (see Quarterly, Vol. II. pg.12), and through them was a kinsman of Gen. George Washington. David Jameson was made in 1777 one of the privy council. In 1781 he was Lieutenant-Governor under Governor Thomas Nelson, and in 1783 a member of the State Senate, &c. He was also a prominent merchant of Yorktown.  His will is thus set out in the records of the Hustings Court of that place:
"In the name of God, Amen. I David Jameson of York Town being of sound mind, but at present of indifferent health, do make, constitute & appoint this my last will & Testament.
    I give and bequeath unto my nephew John Jameson one moiety of my estate both real and personal of which I may die possessed of to him the said John and his Heirs forever.
   I give the other moiety of my Estate that I may die possessed of both real and personal to be equally divided between my nephews, David Jameson of Culpeper & David Jameson of Caroline county, to them & their Heirs forever.
    Witness my hand and seal this 14th of October, 1792.

    David Jameson was a member of the Society for the Promotion of Useful Discoveries at Williamsburg, and there is a letter by his friend, Governor John Page, President of the Society, giving the result of some experiments made by him and David Jameson with an instrument of their own invention on the fall of dew and rain -- these experiments being the first that ever were made of their kind in America. Indeed, as Page said, "the first, with such an instrument, in the world."." Image.
