William Cobb

"William settled in "the forks" section, an area between the Watauga and Holston Rivers. By 1772 he had constructed a commodious log house on a limestone knoll, and "Rocky Mount" was soon known far and wide for its hospitality, culture, and conveniences. Both the Cobb and Massengill families became large land owners and prominent citizens in their new location.

William Cobb lived at Rocky Mount until about 1797, when he removed to Grainger County where he owned other land. The house and land then came into the possession of his daughter, Penelope, and her husband, Henry Massengill, Jr., the second family with whom the house is identified. Henry Massengill, Sr., wrote his memoirs in 1779, and his son, Hal, added his thoughts in two sketches dated 1785 and 1790.

After William Cobb left Rocky Mount, the house was owned and preserved by four generations of Masengills. It passed from Henry Massengill, Jr. and Penelope to their sixth child, Michael Masengill, who lived in the house his entire life. His sixth child, William Allen Masengill, married a cousin, Deborah Lucinda Masengill. They became the parents of seven children; Jennie, Lula, Sallie, Maggie, John Michael, Fannie, and Alex. They added weatherboarding to Rocky Mount in the late 1800's to please their "sparkin" " daughters. After the turn of the century, the house was occupied by tenants.

John Michael Masengill realized the historical value of this old home and Southwest Territorial Capitol and had entered into negotiations with the State of Tennessee for its purchase as a historic site. His untimely death in 1958 postponed the purchase only temporarily, In 1959 the state acquired the site from his estate, and restoration was soon begun under the direction of the Tennessee Historical Commission and the Rocky Mount Historical Association. It was opened to the public for the first time on April 1, 1962."
