1888. Capt. Weeks worked on his father's farm until 16 years of age, then at blacksmithing until 20, at which age he entered upon a seafaring life, in the whaling ship Good Return. He was later Captain of several Whale ships such as the Endeavour (1841); Congress (1843) ; Iris (1847). All voyages were successful taking in over 24,000 barrels of oil.Son William followed the sea, a tradition particularly strong in the Bakerville section of Dartmouth; he rose through the ranks to become master of several Whaling ships (out of New Bedford which is located next to Dartmouth), as did his brother, Joshua Jr.
