1716. John Nelson Cook
1Cook family, The John, 4.
Unpublished family record - copy in possession of Jonathan Cook <jandpcook@hotmail.com> (Sent to T.Mason 29 Nov 2003.
"John Nelson Cook and his bride spent the winter of 1843-4 at the home of his father in Commerce. In April 1844 they made the journey with ox team from Commerce to Tompkins through well-nigh unbroken forests to locate on a tract of untouched forest land recently purchased. The first home was that of the pioneer of the day, logs cut by the axe of the husband and shingle riven and shaved by his Iabor. In later years this gave way to the more comodious frame house, but from the beginning until broken up after the death of the founder, this home remained the centre of a strong influence for good. It was the cirouit rider's place of rest and study. Every movement for schools, the church, highways and otherwise had his active support. He was agressive in behalf of the Union in the Civil war, though unable because of broken health to enter the army. He was a cooper by trade, and much of the timber from the oaks felled in clearing the land, became cooperage and yielded its profit, so that the small beginnings In 1844 had become at his death several hundred acres of well tilled land with good buildings and fine orchards."
