"By the will of his father, who died in 1726, Joseph Cook was left land in Tiverton, but he never claimed, it and died himself the following year. His son William had to go to court when he became of age, to obtain title to the land and regain possession from various people who had settled on it. It is from evidence given at that time that the date of Joseph's death is taken. On 10 March 1743/4 Mary (Cory) Cook, then in her 77th year, testified that her son Joseph Cook deceased was "son to my husband Thomas Cook deceased" (Court Files, Suffolk, 58313)."

By his father's will Stephen received the north half of the homestead farm on the 16th Great Lot in Pocasset Purchase and the 20th swamp lot, On 15 January 1739/40, John and Sarah Tallman deeded to Stephen Cook for £200 lot 28 in the second division (Tiverton Deeds 1:62). In 1750 he was involved in a dispute over land with his nephew William Cook concerning possession of a 45 acre tract on the west side of the highway leading from Howland's Ferry to Fall River and adjoining land owned by Jonathan Bennett, The court decided In favor of William's claim, the case was appealed in March 1763, but William won possession of the land and E80 damages plus costs (Newport Court Records, D:187, 207; E.206, from index in office of Newport County Clerk). Elder Peleg Burroughs noted in his journal that this family lived about seven miles distant from him, and on 27 February 1789 he "Stayed all night with old Stephen Cook" (p. 250). Stephen Cook made a deposition 28 November 1795 concerning the family of Thomas Cory, son of William, stating that Thomas was his mother's brother and that his eldest son William Cory had had three wines: Hannah Lake, Mary or Marcy Allen, and Mary, possibly Akins. To questions he responded that William had lived in Tiverton, Newport and Providence, had had children Lydia, Susannah, Ruth, Hannah and Philip by his first wife and that Philip had died without issue (Tiverton Deeds 5:373). On 27 September 1788, calling himself 85 years old, Stephen Cook, yeoman, made his will, stating that he was in bodily health and of perfect mind and memory: ... The will was proved 4 April 1803 (Tiverton, Probate 3:572)."
"His obituary in the Newport Mercury of 5 April 1803 states that "he sustained the unblemished character of an honest, industrious man. It is a circumstance worthy of remark, that he never, during his long life, drank either a dish of coffee or tea."

In April 1733 Stephen Cook Petitioned the Bristol County Court of Common Pleas for an abatement of payments he was making to Malison Chase for support of her child, of which he was the putative father. The court requested that Malison appear at the next session and she did so, in June, but Stephen did not, so the matter was dismissed, Stephen to pay costs.

On 3 February 1795, Stephen Cook Jr. and Ruth Cook signed a petition with Mary Rouse, Nathaniel Pearce, Sarah Pearce, Andrew and Betsey Taylor, and Charles and Mary Irish, requesting that someone be appointed to administer the estate of [Ruth's grandfather] the late George Rouse of Little Compton, the executors named in his will having died (ibid., 149)."
"On 16 September 1785, Stephen Cook of Tiverton and wife Ruth joined with George Simmons, Isaac Pearce and wife Hannah, and Susannah Pearce, all of Little Compton, in deeding a house and land near Lightning Rock to Josias Sawyer, mariner, of Little Compton. The next day Stephen and Ruth Cook, Josias and Betty Sawyer, and Isaac and Hannah Pearce gave a quitclaim deed to George Simmons for some land in Little Compton (Little Compton Deeds 3-72-3).
